Numbness, weakness, and burning sensation of lower limbs (legs) –Is it the disc pain?
- These are typical symptoms in most of the cases with disc-related myelopathy. before opting for surgery please go through the below case study.
A 49-year-old lady with a history of C A uterus done a hysterectomy along with adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy in 2017. She is a known case of diabetes hypertension. She was under disease-modulating anti rheumatoid medications, neuropathic pain killers, and under a specialist for her joint pain. In the year 2020 September she developed pain on the hip with the heaviness of lower limbs, left side greater than right. she was advised for an MRI lumbosacral spine the results show degenerative disc disease of the lumbar Spine at l4-l5, l5-S1Levels with resultant moderate to severe spinal canal stenosis and compression of coda equina. AP diameter (5mm, 6mm). She was advised for immediate surgery for the same from concerned multiple departments.
The real question- Is this due to myelopathy alone and surgery the only option?
Answer – No…why?
-
While looking into her previous reports and MRI done during the time of hysterectomy, the AP diameter was almost similar to 8mm and 6 mm respectively. Patient asymptomatic, not diabetic, and without any joint pain or neuropathic medications. The post-surgical episode was uneventful, she was back to normalcy but due to stiffness and occasional numbness, she was on Anti rheumatoid drugs along with neuropathic medication from 2018 till 2020. Her sugar levels become high, she was on antihypertensive medications, sleep disturbances were frequent and numbness along with burning sensation we’re developing irrespective of neuropathic medications.
Now, what to do...
-
history itself shows multiple Factors which are contributing to her present signs and symptoms
-
there is no clinical sign which points towards immediate surgery other than MRI reports
-
the patient complains of a lack of sleep, numbness, and burning sensation mainly at night
-
her sugar levels are out of range
-
history of neuropathic medications for a long time
-
post-radiotherapy changes over the lumbar spine and soft tissues
-
patient main symptoms are muscle stiffness and heaviness
Treatment option – Conservative Ayurveda management will give the result. Treatments include external Ayurveda therapies and internal medication to support the comorbidities.
Course during the stay
-
during the first week itself, almost all major symptoms addressed and she’s feeling 90% free from her clinical presentations
-
she is having her second course of treatments, not showing any signs of myelopathy but occasional lack of sleep.
